Desde hace mucho años, el azúcar ha estado vinculado directamente a la diabetes tipo 2. Por esta razón, la industria alimentaria ha producido diversos edulcorantes artificiales como una forma alterna de consumir endulzante, sin el riesgo que conlleva el tradicional azúcar de caña.

Sin embargo, un nuevo estudio clínico realizado por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), en conjunto con el Hospital General de México, encontró que la sucralosa, un edulcorante artificial que casi todos consumimos, causa alteraciones parecidas a las que se producen antes de la diabetes tipo 2.

La sucralosa “es recomendada para los pacientes con diabetes, ya que mantiene el sabor dulce sin incrementar calorías ni picos glucémicos”. Sin embargo, “el consumo frecuente de sucralosa en personas sanas puede incrementar los niveles de glucosa e insulina en la sangre”, según informa un artículo publicado en la Gaceta UNAM.

De acuerdo con la revista universitaria, el doctor Galileo Escobedo, investigador de la Unidad de Medicina Experimental UNAM – Hospital General de México y tutor en diversos posgrados de la máxima casa de estudios, encontró estos y otros efectos nocivos de la sucralosa en la microbiota intestinal.

Los científicos definen a la microbiota como “el conjunto de los microorganismos (todas las bacterias, arqueas, eucariotas y virus) presentes en un entorno definido”. A la microbiota situada en el tracto intestinal, por ejemplo, se la denomina microbiota intestinal.

De acuerdo con la Gaceta UNAM, el ensayo clínico fue realizado en dos grupos de hombres y mujeres. “Durante 10 semanas, a uno se le dio diario 48 miligramos de sucralosa en el agua y al otro, el grupo control, un placebo ( solo agua)”.

En este contexto, el estudio demostró que la sucralosa causa disbiosis intestinal, es decir, una alteración “dramática” en el balance o proporción de las bacterias intestinales que tiene un individuo, refiere el artículo de la revista universitaria.

El doctor Galileo Escobedo recomendó que los pacientes con diabetes que consuman la sucralosa o los endulzantes artificiales por necesidad, lo hagan bajo vigilancia médica para evitar un desequilibrio en los niveles de glucosa en la sangre.
